Briny Breezes is a tiny incorporated town in Palm Beach County, Florida, occupying a narrow barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway along State Road A1A, just south of Boynton Beach. It is one of the most unusual municipalities in the state: the entire town consists of roughly 488 mobile homes, and it is one of only two incorporated mobile home parks in Florida, along with Ocean Breeze. The town's origins date to the 1930s, when landowner Ward Miller began allowing tourists to park travel trailers on his property for a few dollars a week. The encampment grew steadily, and in 1958 the residents pooled their resources to buy the land outright for about $1.5 million. They incorporated the Town of Briny Breezes in 1963, creating a resident-owned community that has remained largely in the hands of its homeowners ever since. Its population, recorded at 502 in the 2020 census, is composed largely of seasonal residents from the Northeast, the Midwest, and Canada. Briny Breezes has become nationally known for its prime real estate and its residents' determination to keep it. Surrounded by the wealthy towns of Ocean Ridge and Gulf Stream, and fronting both the ocean and the Intracoastal, the town has repeatedly attracted developer buyout offers. A mid-2000s bid reached roughly $510 million, and later nine-figure offers have also been declined, with residents choosing to preserve their community. Students attend Palm Beach County public schools, including Atlantic High School. The result is a quiet, self-governing oceanfront enclave that has held its simple, cooperative character amid one of the most valuable coastal markets in the country.
